“Under Construction” - The view of my backyard right now.
Currently, we’re building a small apartment for my mom in our backyard so that she can be closer to us as she gets older. This was precipitated by a health scare this summer, but we’ve always known my mom would come to live with us eventually. It has always been part of our family plan, and we’re really fortunate that this is an option for us.
But, of course, it’s fraught when you’re renegotiating things with a parent. There are shifting dynamics of power to navigate and new boundaries to create, and I’ve had some real angst about it all. But as mom and I were laughing together this weekend as we picked out tiles for her new bathroom, I knew it was going to be okay.
It’s helpful for me to think about being “under construction” around our mother-daughter relationship right now. What’s being built is not just the physical structure in our back yard. We’re actually building the next phase of our relationship, as well. And as with all construction projects, you need good plans but then you also have to just figure it out along the way!
I’m reminded that I actually have a lot of things “under construction” right now - new teams I’m on, new online and coaching work, new projects that feel a bit impossible in their audacity, and the ever changing needs of my family. This might be an especially intense period of change for me, but the truth is I’m always “under construction.”
How about you…what are you building in your life or work right now?
