Several times in my life, people - close friends - have told me something about myself that I didn’t know. After several years of friendship, my friend Karen told me that I was “intense.” And she was right: I love fiercely. I laugh loudly. I can carry a grudge for a mile, and I hate cheese with the fire of a thousand suns. (All except mozzarella, which is fine on pizza but nowhere else. Part of my intensity, by the way, is a set of conflicting and contradictory likes and dislikes.)
Later in my life, my friend Deborah Frieze told me that I was a “walk out.” And while I initially rejected the notion, I realized that she was also right: I have left systems and organizations that just don’t serve me or the folks I care about throughout my professional life. It’s part of the reason that I’ve worked for myself for the past eight years: this desire to create what I want on my own terms.
So when, even later in my life, my friend Tim Merry called me an entrepreneur, I had to take a moment and pause. I don’t particularly feel like an entrepreneur. I don’t have an idea a minute. I’m not particularly skilled at making deals and selling my work, and I’m not a member of any business organizations. But as with the other things my friends have told me about myself, I realized that they knew something about me that I hadn’t until that point. In this case, I am an entrepreneur. I’m finding that I need to instigate particular work because I have things I want to see in the world and not simply in response to others’ visions.
And so it is with my new collaborative effort with Tim. I’m excited to tell you that we’re launching a new online space called Work done better. Together.
It’s been cooking for a while now as Tim and I have heard the need for people to go deeper into both practical topics - how do I run that meeting? - to their desire for more in depth leadership support for how to work in rapidly changing environments.
Last fall we ran a pilot course called Leading Effective Meetings, where we learned a bunch, had a ton of fun, and decided that we were ready to launch a more comprehensive offering.
Head on over to Work done better. Together. and check out our 2016 programs. We’ve got the 5-part Leading Effective Meetings course launching next month. A webinar series we’ll offer this summer and fall which brings together our latest teaching on collaboration, working in difference, and systems change. And we’ll also have the opportunity for folks to join us in individual and group coaching.
It’s all super exciting!
Turns out, I am a bit of an entrepreneur. I want to see us do work better together in the world, and this is one way I’m making it happen. I hope you’ll join us in this new venture!
This blog is a place where I share what I'm doing out in the world, reflect on what I'm learning, and also capture some of my random thoughts. I'd love these blogs to start new conversations. Please join me in the comments or send me an email about what these posts bring up
