This video blog originally appeared on the Art of Hosting Beyond the Basics blog on 7/14/2014. It's a short teach on one way that power shows up in our change work and how we might want to work with it and each other across different levels of power. I wanted to republish it here and add some of my current thoughts at the end of the post.
Added on Jan 20, 2016: One of the key stances that I bring to my work is that “power matters,” and I’ve certainly found this to be true in all of my work. The workings and types of power are important to our relationships we develop, the processes we use, and the results we obtain in our work. So it makes sense that each time I have explicitly brought conversations about power into the room, the dynamic shifts. Folks are ready, willing, and anxious to talk about power together! And it isn’t alway an easy conversation. In fact, I’m not sure it’s ever been an easy conversation.
This is good.
We need to have nuanced, strategic, and, yes, challenging conversations to move our own understanding and work with power forward. Power matters, so be ready to work with it directly.
This blog is a place where I share what I'm doing out in the world, reflect on what I'm learning, and also capture some of my random thoughts. I'd love these blogs to start new conversations. Please join me in the comments or send me an email about what these posts bring up
